You’ve probably heard of the infamous chia pet – the decorative plant found in the homes of many children whose parents aren’t ready to commit to a dog or cat. A lesser known fact about these tiny seeds – they are an amazing source of nutrients! In fact, the Mayans, Incas and Aztecs all used them as a strength food, to stay strong during battles and gain energy when having to run long distances. So what makes these seeds so amazing?
Jam-packed with antioxidants – Chia seeds will help your body fight against harmful free radicals. These free radicals can cause premature aging of the skin and tissue inflammation. With a daily dose of this food source, you’ll better maintain a more youthful glow!
Goodbye Redbull, hello Chia seeds – With nearly 2x as much protein as other seeds and grains, Chia seeds help to maintain levels of energy throughout your day, without the normal ups and downs that come with the food you eat. Along the same lines, this super food helps maintain your blood sugar levels. Chia seeds help to slow down the body’s process of converting starches to sugars. This allows for slow and sustained energy throughout the day from your food, as opposed to the sugar high followed by a crash.
Stay full and lose weight – This particular seed has a unique gelling quality when exposed to water, which causes the seed to grow in density and in size. This gel coating takes longer for the body to digest, therefore allowing your body to feel full and satisfied for longer.
High Source of Fiber and Omega 3s – Chia seeds are full of insoluble fiber which keep your colon hydrated and your body regular. These seeds are also rich in omega 3 fatty acids, helping to lower your cholesterol and maintain a healthy heart.
Before you run home and gobble up your chia pet, you can find chia seeds at many local grocery stores, such as PCC. With a spoon full of chia seeds and a nice massage, you’ll be set!

Ch-ch-ch-Chia! Who knew?
Haha! A disclaimer: you’re not supposed to eat the chia seeds from the chia pets. They are not tested for human consumption.
Thanks Evie! I just got some of these yesterday and I took them to school today to show my students! I can attest that they are so good, even 5th graders love to eat them! Do you have any ideas of what to put them in? Word on the street is that they are also in kombucha now!
Interesting, Katie! Looks like I’ll have to write about kombucha next.
I love a delicious blend of roasted golden flax seed and chia seeds called FitFlax. It’s a great choice to boost your immune system, and high in fiber. It’s great in smoothies, oatmeal and on veggies. Enjoy the benefit of flax seed and the benefit of chia seeds
