If you’ve ever had a massage before, chances are your massage therapist has emphasized the need for you to drink lots of water afterwards. In fact, they’ll often hand you a large glass of H2O before leaving the massage room. Just in case they haven’t told you exactly why drinking water is important after a massage, here it is!
Hydration flush – Interestingly enough, massage actually dehydrates your muscles. By massaging out tension in your muscles, massage also works out some of the muscles’ natural fluids as well. Consuming a couple extra glasses of water after your massage will help prevent any soreness and pain in the days that follow.
Toxin flush – Our muscles need water and minerals, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium, to provide movement and proper functionally for our bodies. As our muscles consume these minerals, they also leave behind the unusable discards. This tends to build up in your muscles over time. Massage helps to release these toxins out of your muscles and into the rest of your body. Water helps to flush these toxins out of your body as opposed to letting them continue to absorb back into your muscles.
You may not find it very surprising that staying hydrated before your massage also has its benefits. By keeping your body full of water, your massage therapist can more easily work out the knots in your muscles and help you find ultimate relief. Is it just me, or has all this massage talk inspired you to schedule a session?
